120-kW Fuel Cell/Electric Propulsion System (Hyundai Nexo)
150-kW Propulsion System (Hyundai Kona EV)
Nitpicking: “engine or engine substitute”. An electric motor system is not an engine, and an engine is only colloquially a “motor”.

They should update this with the future in mind and change it to “10 best Vehicle Propulsion Systems” I guess

Motors are anything that induce motion. Both are motors. The gas powered ones are engines.

We live in a glorious time of horsepower.

Right. The gripe I usually hear regarding engine-as-motor has, I think, to do with the nonspecifici
ty, and the fact that the majority of motors qua motors
(air, hydraulic, electric)
are power source in x efficiency = power out, rather than being a complex system. Lots of people pitch a fit over engine-as-motor as a result, even if logical and etymological reasoning supports calling it a motor.

As it is, t

Is there some sort of volume requirement to make this list? Seeing as the Ford 5.0 made it on but not the Voodoo 5.8

Who the hell is Wards? Like Montgomery-Wards?

they’ve only been covering the industry for 80 years or so.

they’re actually quite well-regarded in the industry. they focus more on industry and trade publications (like SAE) and not consumer magazines.

As it is, they’re trying to split the baby between the traditional name of the title and being inclusive. Which is dumb.
Why is it dumb? The 10 Best engines list has often included alternate fuels (including hydrogen) and hybrid systems, and all levels of power outputs
.
It’s a completely subjective list that looks at power, torque, NVH, competitive comparisons, and technical relevance.
It only makes sense that a subjective comparison that looks at NVH, torque, and technical relevence would occasionally reward electric motors for being better in those categories than the internal combustion engines that the list is named for.

I’m mostly just goofing on the name not being technically accurate. Alternative fuel engines are still engines, and hybrid systems are “engines with stuff”; listing electric only is the point at which the shark is *technically* jumped even if other steps comprise a ramp for one’s skis. Because it’s not an engine, it is an engine-equivalent or substitute.
10 Best Powerplants would be a slightly better fit - or if the list is more holistic, 10 Best Drivetrains.

No, just no.
![]() 12/14/2018 at 12:41 |

I don’t know about that . The low-end torque in my 2.7 ecoboost in the truck is deeply impressive. The turbos have spooled up in a big way by 1500 rpm.
![]() 12/14/2018 at 12:45 |

Any EB I’ve driven has torque down low, after the initial lag as they spool. That is followed by them about falling on their faces around 5k. Also followed by utter garbage mileage if you actually try to use said torque. This has been my experience with the 1.6EB, the 2.7EB, and numerous 3.5EBs.
It may not be much lag, but when you’re used to the instant torque of a good NA engine, any lag is too much and the severe penalty to mileage to use the torque isn’t worth it.

Agreed on the top end. There is no reason to rev them over 5k. Of course, there also wasn’t a reason to rev my 7.3 power stoke over 3k.
The mileage has been fantastic in my truck over the last 2 years . 22-24mpg on the highway at 80ish mph depending on terrain and wind , 19-20 ish in town . 13.5 mpg (11.5 on really windy day) towing 6500lbs of large boat at 80ish mph (of which, my 7.3 powerstroke was the only other tow vehicle to get double digit mileage. The V8 gasoline trucks over the years usually did about 6-7mph towing that boat ). Towing more reasonable things like the racecar on an open trailer that aside from the fender s tucks in behind the truck aerodynamically, 16ish to 18ish mpg depending on how much climbing I’m doing ).
I will add the caveat that using cruise control (especially when towing) seems to be mandatory to get fuel mileage out of the ecoboost engines. Not using cruise control, the smallest throttle input my foot can make invariably spools up the turbos more than needed and mpg suffers accordingly. I’ve gotten less than 20mpg out of it unloaded on the highway when not using cruise control.
While I love the sound of a V8, my experience has been that the V8 is now a technical problem that has been solved.
